SOLID STATE RELAYS WHITE PAPER

The benefits of utilising a heat sink at a higher temperature.

Heatsink sizing is one of the most critical steps when using solid state relays (SSRs). The heatsink provides the necessary thermal dissipation for the power losses in the SSR power unit. This paper gives a detailed thermal analysis of the SSR and heatsink and proposes ways how OEMs can:
- Save space in the electrical cabinet
- Increase the load current in the SSR
- Save on overall system cost

MC88C: THE HIGHLY VERSATILE SAFETY MAGNETIC SENSOR SERIES WITH A LONG SWITCHING DISTANCE

Suitable for monitoring safety gates in industrial harsh environments.

Lainate, December 2020 - Carlo Gavazzi Automation, the international electronics group with activities in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic equipment, today is proud to introduce its new family of MC88C which widens the range of MC safety magnetic sensors together with the recently launched MC36C sensor.

The new MC88C series of magnetically-coded REED safety magnetic sensors is the ideal solution to monitor the position of sliding, hinged and removable safety guards, insensitive to dirt and dust, especially where a precise approach is not possible and greater tolerances are required.

When connected to a safety module, these sensors are suitable for safety gate applications up to PLe/Category 4 according to EN ISO 13849-1. They can stop or disconnect dangerous motions when mobile protections are opened or displaced.

“The new MC88C sensor series is extremely versatile and easy to install”, Davide Boschetti International Product Specialist says. “By selecting one of the three actuators it is possible to change the switching distance between 5, 8, and 18 mm.This extra-wide sensing range is mainly targeted at applications for monitoring gates in safety fences, for covers, lids and roll up doors and for position detection.”

Main technical features
• Output configuration: 2NO, 1NO + 1NC, 2NO + 1NC
• 2m PVC cable, M8-Plug or pig-tail with M12 connector
• Left or right exit connection versions
• LED version also available for all mechanical variants
• Assured switching distance (Sao): 5 mm with actuator MC88CM1, 8 mm with actuator MC88CM2, 18 mm with actuator MC88CM3
• Assured switch-off distance (Sar): 15 mm with actuator MC88CM1, 18 mm with actuator MC88CM2, 30 mm with actuator MC88CM3
• Operating temperature between -25 and +80°C (-13 to 176 °F)
• Standard dimensions: 88 x 25 x 13 mm
• Rated operating voltage: 12-24 VAC/VDC
• Rated operating current: 0.25 A (resistive load)
• Maximum switching load: 6 W (resistive load)

THE NEW NRG DIGITAL SOLID STATE RELAYS WITH AN EtherNet/IP™ INTERFACE

Compact, multifunction solid state relays with real-time monitoring enable reduction of costly unplanned downtime.

Lainate, December 2020 - Carlo Gavazzi Automation, the international electronics group with activities in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic equipment, today presents an addition to the family of Ethernet-based NRG solid state relays – the NRG with an EtherNet/IP™ communication interface.

The digital transformation is a reality in every sector. In industrial automation, many businesses are turning to advanced technologies to ensure they remain competitive and continue to thrive. At the core of all this is data, an indispensable resource to guarantee maximized plant efficiency and cost savings.

The NRG is the solid state relay platform that perfectly matches to the emerging needs of the new industrial automation revolution. Switching, real-time monitoring and data exchange with the machine controller are possible through a communication interface added to the solid state relay. This interface enables real-time monitoring, crucial to predict failures, reduce unplanned machine stoppages and optimize machine performance.

The interface between the NRG and the machine controller is possible via Modbus, PROFINET and now also via EtherNet/IP™.

“Machine components need to be connected in a scalable and efficient way”, Dorianne Grech International Product Manager says. “In recent years, Industrial Ethernet protocols have taken over serial fieldbus protocols, mainly due to their faster communication speed. After the recent launch of the NRG with PROFINET, we are now providing an additional solution for easy and efficient integration of the NRG in EtherNet/IP™ networked machines.”

Developed in our competence centre in Malta, the NRG has been designed to suit any heating application where precise temperature control is crucial to guarantee the quality of the end product and where unplanned machine stoppages can result in a considerable loss of revenue. Typical applications are plastic injection machines, packaging machines, semiconductor manufacturing and glass tempering machines.

Main technical features
• EtherNet/IP™ (ODVA conformant), PROFINET (PI certified) or Modbus RTU interface
• Up to 32 NRG solid state relays in 1 NRG bus chain
• An NRG bus chain occupies 1 adapter (EtherNet/IP™), 1 node (PROFINET) or 1 Modbus address
• NRG solid state relays ratings up to 660 VAC, 90 A
• ON/OFF or % power control modes
• Selectable switching modes
• Predictive failure detection with Load deviation indication
• Read-outs: Current, Voltage, Power, Energy consumption kWh, Load and SSR Running hours
• Malfunction detection: Mains loss, Load loss, SSR short circuit, SSR over-temperature, Voltage/Current/Frequency out-of-range
